Why do We Need to Understand How to Insert Link in Excel?


In the data processing process on a spreadsheet file, sometimes we need to create navigational links. These links might be needed to make our work easier in that file. If the data in our sheet has relevance with websites, other sheets, or other workbooks, then the links can be helpful. When we need to see other places to process or better understand the data, we just need to click the link. The navigation that we need to do in our spreadsheet file will be easier to do.

The links can help people navigating to a website, sheet, or another relevant workbook. This should make our product data processing result much easier to be understood.

How to add hyperlink in excel is a function to give a navigational link. This function is needed if you want to make navigation easier to various relevant places inside or outside your spreadsheet file.


How to Create Link in Excel?


The following will explain how to add hyperlink in excel. There are two methods to do it and both will be described step-by-step.

If later in the description you need to input the navigation destination, here is the input forms with their function.

Method 1 - Menu Insert Link

  1. In the Insert tab, click Link

  2. In the dialog box shown, input your navigation destination as you need. You can navigate to a website, other sheets, or email sending.

  3. Input also the text that will be shown in the cell. This text is later clicked for the navigational purpose

  4. Click OK

Method 2 - HYPERLINK Formula

  1. Type equal sign ( = ) in the cell where you want to put the navigation trigger

  2. Type HYPERLINK (can be with large and small letters) and open bracket sign after =

  3. Input navigation destination or cell coordinate where the destination is after the open bracket sign. If you want to type directly and not inputting a cell coordinate, then you must type the destination between two quotation signs (“”)

  4. Optional: Type comma sign ( , ) then input the text to be seen in the cell that can be clicked later to do the navigation. If you don’t give an input in this part, then the text will be the text of the navigation destination that you input previously

  5. Input close bracket sign

  6. Press Enter
  7. Done!

Additional Note


If you add hyperlinks for the same sheet cell navigation, you still need to input the sheet name in the destination (Cannot be only just the cell coordinate).
