The following will explain three methods of how to merge cells in excel. There are some results choices that you can choose according to your needs. If you are a Windows user, then you can use the shortcut buttons method to potentially do the merging process faster.


Method 1 - Merge Menu

  1. Highlight all the places that you want to combine

  2. Click the Merge dropdown menu in the Home Tab

  3. Choose the combination type according to your preference. Here is the explanation for each type:

    • Merge & Center: Combine before making the content centered
    • Merge Across: Combine each row in your highlighted range
    • Merge Cells: Combine normally
    • Unmerge Cells: Separate the result of the previous combination

  4. Done!

Method 2 - Right-Click

  1. Highlight all the places that you want to combine

  2. Right-click on your highlighted places and choose Format Cells...

  3. Choose the Alignment tab

  4. In the Text Control part, check the Merge Cells checkbox

  5. Click OK

  6. Done!

Method 3 - Shortcut Buttons (Only Windows)

  1. Highlight all the places that you want to combine

  2. Press the shortcut buttons combination according to your combination type preference. Here is the explanation of the shortcut buttons that must be pressed for every type. The description of the combination types is in the previous step 3 method 1:
    • Merge & Center: Alt H + M + M
    • Merge Across: Alt H + M + C
    • Merge Cells: Alt H + M + A
    • Unmerge Cells: Alt H + M + U

    The letter buttons must be pressed in order while the Alt is pressed along with the press of the letter buttons

  3. Done!

If you combine more than one coordinates which have contents, then you can only get the content of the most-left one in your combination result.
