What are the Things We Should Consider When Buying a Keyboard for Excel?

For us, there are four things we look for when we buy a keyboard to primarily help us work in excel.

  • The Ctrl button position on the keyboard. For convenience and easy-to-access sakes, this button should be at the most bottom left on the keyboard.

To help us work in excel faster, we often need to press Ctrl buttons for various basic operations (copy, paste, undo, etc). Some keyboards have this button on the most bottom left while the others have the Fn button there instead (the Ctrl button is usually on the right of the Fn button).

If you want to work faster with the Ctrl button, it should be in a strategic position for you to press. That position seems to be better at the most bottom left on your keyboard

  • There should be a numeric keypad on the keyboard. The numeric keypad has some useful functions in excel, such as for shortcuts and inserting several symbols. These functions should make it easier for us when we work in excel.

Besides if you need to type long numbers (which some people may often need to input in their excel file), it is often more comfortable if you use a numeric keypad.

Some keyboards have a special section for the numeric keypad and some keyboards don’t. As this tool can help us work in excel, we prefer the ones that have it

  • The set of Page Up, Page Down, Home, and End buttons is intact on the keyboard. For various purposes, those buttons can be valuable to help us navigate much faster in excel. As a result, they can save us more time to do much more meaningful things in our data processing process.

Some keyboards merge these buttons with other buttons while others have them separated. As we cannot use them for navigation when they are merged, we prefer the keyboards which have these buttons separated

  • The design is ergonomic and easy to use. This is so we are comfortable when we work in excel and not waste time just to adapt to the keyboard

All the keyboards we recommend in our list above have these four specifications.

As for the extras, instant access buttons, wrist rest, long battery life (if it is wireless), and low profile keys should be nice.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How to Maintain the Keyboard We Use Primarily for Excel?

Here are some tips you can implement to keep the keyboard you purchase in its optimal state.

  • Clean your keyboard properly. Use a lint-free cloth when you want to wipe your keyboard from dirt to avoid scratches.

If you want to remove dust between its buttons, you can use things like a small vacuum cleaner to help you. Using an earbud with its edges dipped in a cleaner should do for that too

  • Don’t place anything heavy above the keyboard. A keyboard has internal circuits and wires which can break if you press them against a heavy object. Thus, don’t do that wherever you put your keyboard on

  • Cover the keyboard when you don’t use it. Dust, dirt, or spillages that goes into the inside of your keyboard can make its buttons unusable. To help to prevent that, cover your keyboard before and after its use.

With what should we cover our keyboard? Dust-proof covers like poly covers should be sufficient to keep your keyboard clean. Avoid using things like cloth covers as they have pores (micro-holes) which make them unable to keep micro dust away

Wrap Up

A keyboard is essential if we want to work in excel. After all, this is the tool that helps us to input data, create formulas, and do other basic things in excel.

There are many keyboards that we can choose from when we want to buy a keyboard for excel. To help you choose the best one, we have created the list of the keyboards we recommend for excel work.

Here are the seven keyboards we mentioned in the list for your convenience.
We recommend them based on things like the placement of useful buttons when working in excel and their ease of use. We also look through things like instant access buttons, low profile keys, and other nice specifications at some of them.

We hope this list can help you purchase the best keyboard for you!
