ISTEXT Function in Excel
In this tutorial, you will learn all the things you need about ISTEXT excel formula. ISTEXT function in excel is useful to evaluate whether a data has a text form or not. It will give TRUE or FALSE logic value depending on the evaluation process result.
Why do We Need to Learn ISTEXT Excel Formula?
In the processing on a spreadsheet, sometimes we need to identify data whether it has a text form. This might be needed when we want to compare more than one data where it seems all of them have text form but the comparison result is not what we expect. In this case, we might need to see whether all the data are in the form of text or not so the comparison process will not produce the wrong result on our spreadsheet.
As an example of that need in our work, maybe we can see the moment when we need to look up data based on the information from the database on our spreadsheet. In doing the lookup process, maybe we use a formula such as INDEX MATCH, HLOOKUP, or VLOOKUP to help us. All the information in the database might be in the form of text and if the value that we use as the lookup reference is in the form of non-text, then that will produce an error in the lookup result. Of course, this must be avoided because we need the correct result from the process for our specific needs.
If we need to check all the data in the spreadsheet for the lookup process whether they are in the form of text or not and the number of data that we need to check is a lot, then, of course, it will be very troublesome if we do it manually. Moreover, all the data that we need to check might do look similar generally and they are only different in the form of the data. This makes it harder for us to do the checking process.
To help make the process faster, then we can use the ISTEXT excel formula.
ISTEXT function in excel will help you to evaluate data whether it is in the form of text or not and give TRUE or FALSE based on the evaluation process. It is useful to be understood if you often do comparison or other processes that need data form identification in the spreadsheet.
What is ISTEXT Function in Excel?
ISTEXT function in excel is a function with the usage objective to evaluate a value whether it is in the form of text or not and give TRUE if yes or FALSE if not. ISTEXT function in excel is often used with the IF formula because IF can give particular values based on the TRUE or FALSE. ISTEXT excel formula is one of the IS formulas in spreadsheet besides ISNUMBER, ISERROR, and the others.
Briefly, the input of this function can be explained as follows:
=ISTEXT(value)
Note:
value = the data or formula which result you want to check whether the form is in text
How to Use ISTEXT Excel Formula?
The following will explain how to write the ISTEXT excel formula. ISTEXT function in excel only needs the input of the value that you want to evaluate the form of.
Using ISTEXT Function in Excel
-
Type equal sign ( = ) in the cell where you want to put the result in
-
Type ISTEXT (can be with large and small letters) and open bracket sign after =
-
Input the data / the process that produces the data / cell coordinate where it is located after open bracket sign
-
Type close bracket sign
- Press Enter
-
The process is done!

Questions
Answer each question in the gray-colored cells on each number row that is appropriate!- Is the cell content on the left text? Answer with TRUE or FALSE!
- Is the cell content on the left text? Answer with “V” if yes and “X” if not! Use IF also to help you answer this question!
- Is the cell content on the left text? Answer with “YES” if yes and “NO” if not! Use IF also to help you answer this question!

Additional Notes
If you evaluate a cell with the content of a formula that produces an empty data (“”), then ISTEXT excel formula will produce TRUE. If the cell is really empty, then it will produce FALSE.
