We can use ROUNDDOWN to round a number (usually a decimal) down to a certain number of decimals.ROUNDDOWN Result

We can start using ROUNDDOWN since excel 2003.The Way to Write It and Its Inputs
Here is the writing form of ROUNDDOWN in excel.
= ROUNDDOWN ( number_to_round , number_of_decimals )
And here is the explanation of each input we should give to ROUNDDOWN.
- number_to_round = the number that we want to round down
- number_of_decimals = the number of decimals we want for the rounding process result
Example of Its Usage and Result
Here is the implementation and result example of ROUNDDOWN in excel.
In the screenshot above, we want to round down our numbers to the number of decimals requested in each row. To do that much easier and faster, we use ROUNDDOWN.
You can see the ROUNDDOWN formula writing for each row on the right side of the table. We input the number we want to round down and the number of decimals we want for the result in ROUNDDOWN. Just as explained in the tutorial’s previous part.
The results are as you can see in the screenshot. We get our rounded decimal numbers in no time using the formula!

After discussing the ROUNDDOWN writing form, inputs, and example, now let’s discuss this formula’s writing steps. We give a screenshot for each step explanation so you can understand the implementation of the step easier!-
Type an equal sign ( = ) in the cell where you want to put the ROUNDDOWN result in

Type ROUNDDOWN (can be with large and small letters) and an open bracket sign after =

Input the number/cell coordinate where the number which you want to round down is. Then, type a comma sign ( , )

Input the number of decimals you want for the result/cell coordinate where it is

Type a close bracket sign
- Press Enter

Round Down to the Nearest Whole Number in Excel Using ROUNDDOWN
What if instead of rounding down to another decimal, we want to round down to a whole number? Can we do that using ROUNDDOWN?The answer is yes, you can! Just input 0 for the number of decimals you request as a symbol that you want a whole number result.
With that in mind, here is the writing form of ROUNDDOWN which rounds down your decimal to its nearest whole number.
= ROUNDDOWN ( number_to_round , 0 )
Write the ROUNDDOWN normally and don’t forget to give 0 as its number of decimals input!
To make the explanation clearer, here is an example of the ROUNDDOWN writing implementation in excel.
In this example, we use 0 for the number of decimals inputs in our ROUNDDOWNs to round down our numbers. As a result, we get all the results in whole numbers!
Round Down to the Nearest 10, 100, etc Multiples in Excel Using ROUNDDOWN
By using ROUNDDOWN, you can also round down a number you have to 10 multiples (10, 100, 1000, etc) fast. You just need to give a negative number to the number of decimals input in your ROUNDDOWN.Generally, here is the writing form of ROUNDDOWN to do the rounding process.
= ROUNDDOWN ( number_to_round , - power_level_of_10 )
The negative number you input into ROUNDDOWN depends on the power level of 10 you want for the rounding process result. Here are some examples for that.
- If you input -1, then ROUNDDOWN will round down your number to the nearest 10 multiples (10 = 10 powered by 1)
- If you input -2, then ROUNDDOWN will round down your number to the nearest 100 multiples (100 = 10 powered by 2)
- If you input -5, then ROUNDDOWN will round down your number to the nearest 10000 multiples (10000 = 10 powered by 5)
Still confused? Here is the implementation example of this ROUNDDOWN concept.
As you can see in the example, we get 10, 100, 1000, and 10000000 multiples rounding process results for our numbers. That is because we give a negative number for the second input of each of our ROUNDDOWNs!
We adjust the magnitude of the negative number input according to the multiples we want to round down our number to. We use -1 for 10, -2, for 100, -3 for 1000, and -7 for 10000000.
